The Power of Expression by Tayler - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

Writing has always been a passion of mine. I remember that during my childhood, after watching television, I would often write random words in my notebook. My notebook was a wide-ruled black-and-white composition notebook, and I wrote the words of a random book in yellow marker. Of course, after a while, I could not see my writing, but the joy I found was in the hobby of writing.
Before I started college, one Christmas I received a journal from my mother filled with writing prompts and quotes, and a blank one from my older sister. Those two journals I first hesitated to take with me to college because I thought there would be no purpose or time to engage in journaling. My first year of college was challenging as I was introduced to taking upper-level classes, unexpected surgical procedures, and the worry about affording tuition. The first year of college was hard for me because I felt like I had to be independent by myself to make it through. During times when I was overwhelmed and considering transferring, I resorted to writing in my journals. I was never the person to seek out assistance because I always wanted to figure things out for myself. When I couldn't find the right solution, I journaled and channeled all my energy, emotions, thoughts, and goals into my journals to express myself and see my growth throughout the years.
My journals allow me to express myself and aid my academic success; they became the guide I needed to look at inspirational quotes, answer writing prompts, or reflect on my own challenges figuring college life out. The power of expression turned my own struggles into a superpower of flexibility and adaptability; I know that when I finish college, I will be able to look back at my journals, feeling relieved to see my growth.
