WRITE IT DOWN!! by Taleiysa - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

The smallest habit that has made the biggest difference in my academic and personal success is something simple, but amazing. I write everything down. Not just assignments or deadlines, but plans, worries, ideas, and steps, even when they are obvious or small.

I didn’t always do this. For a long time, I relied on my memory and motivation, assuming I would “just remember” what needed to get done. That worked for a while, but between school, long work hours, and personal responsibilities, my head felt like a browser with too many tabs open. Important tasks slipped through, stress built up, and I felt constantly behind even when I was working hard.

Every morning or night, I make a short, realistic list of what needs to get done, what would be helpful to get done, and what absolutely can wait. This habit doesn’t take long, but it creates structure. It turns overwhelming goals into manageable steps and stress into something concrete I can address. Instead of carrying everything mentally, I put it on paper and free up energy to focus.

Academically, this habit helped me stay organized and consistent. Writing out assignments and deadlines forces me to actually see my workload instead of guessing at it. Breaking projects into steps makes starting easier, which is often the hardest part. When I cross something off a list, it creates momentum and pushes me forward to know that success is happening even in small steps.

This habit also taught me that success isn't always about working harder, but about working more intentionally. Writing things down reminds me that progress doesn’t come from perfection, but from showing up consistently.

In a world that constantly demands more from you, this small routine keeps me focused and grounded. It’s simple, quiet, and easy, but it has made a lasting difference in how I live. Sometimes the smallest habits are the ones that carry you the farthest.
