I strongly believe that the most difficult things to listen to is exactly what you need to hear. Some of the most important lessons in life come from being willing to listen to feedback, even when it is difficult to hear. Throughout my years of competitively playing golf, I learned that improvement does not happen by simply practicing harder. It also requires being honest with yourself, accepting advice, and being willing to change.
I started playing golf in seventh grade and continued until I graduated high school. Throughout all four years of high school, I was a member of the varsity golf team at John Marshall. I competed in many tournaments, including Districts. Golf is unique because although you can be part of a team, every shot is dependent on you. Once you step up to the tee box, there is no one who can take the shot for you. If you are playing badly, you cannot simply be taken out of the game. You have to keep going, learn from your mistakes, and find a way to improve.
There were times when I struggled with my game and became frustrated with myself. When my coach gave me feedback about areas where I needed to improve, it was not always easy to hear. I sometimes felt like I was already putting in a lot of effort, so being told that I needed to change something was discouraging. However, I eventually learned that feedback was not a reflection of my abilities or a sign that I was failing. It was an opportunity to become better.
I began taking my coach's feedback and applying it to my practice. Instead of becoming upset after a bad shot, I started paying more attention to what caused the mistake and what I could do differently the next time. I learned to focus less on being perfect and more on making progress. Even when I had a bad tournament or made mistakes, I could use those experiences to identify what I needed to work on.
This experience changed the way I approach learning and personal growth. I learned that improvement requires being open to criticism and recognizing that I will not always have the right answer. Whether I am in a classroom, at work, or facing a personal challenge, I now try to listen to the people around me and use their advice instead of immediately taking it personally. Feedback has taught me that making mistakes means there is something I can learn from.
Although I will not continue playing competitively in college, the lessons golf taught me will stay with me. Golf strengthened my mental toughness, taught me how to handle setbacks, and showed me the importance of being willing to grow. Most importantly, it taught me that becoming better starts with being willing to listen. I know I will continue receiving feedback throughout college, my future career, and everyday life, and I want to approach it as an opportunity to improve rather than something to fear.
