When I enrolled in physics, I expected it to be difficult, but I underestimated just how much it would challenge me. From the first few weeks, I struggled to connect the mathematical equations with the physical concepts behind them. My quiz and test grades reflected that confusion, and for the first time in a long time, I seriously considered dropping a class.
Instead, I decided to change how I approached learning.
I spent more time reviewing my mistakes, asked questions whenever I was confused, and worked through practice problems until I could explain each step instead of just repeating it. My physics teacher, Mr. Russo, was likely exhausted by how many times a day I came into his room to ask a question.
My grades did not improve overnight, and there were still assignments that left me frustrated. However, I began noticing something more important than a higher score. Problems that once seemed impossible became manageable because I had learned how to analyze them logically. Instead of panicking when I encountered an unfamiliar question, I learned to break it into smaller pieces, identify what information I had, and determine which principles applied.
Physics somehow gave me more confidence in my intelligence and my abilities to solve problems. It taught me persistence when success was not immediate, patience when progress was slow, and confidence that difficult concepts become understandable through consistent effort. Most importantly, it reshaped the way I approach challenges. I no longer expect to understand everything on the first attempt. Now, I know that setbacks are part of the learning process and that real growth comes from working through them.
