One skill I hope to master in the next few years is effective communication, along with developing the confidence to take on leadership roles. As someone who is naturally introverted, I have often found it difficult to speak up in group settings or clearly express my thoughts. I tend to listen more than I talk, which can make it challenging to share my ideas, even when I have something meaningful to contribute. However, as I prepare to study pre-veterinary medicine in college, I understand that strong communication and leadership skills will be essential to my success.

Veterinarians do far more than treat animals. They also work closely with people, often in emotional or stressful situations. Pet owners rely on veterinarians to explain diagnoses, discuss treatment options, and provide reassurance during difficult moments. If a veterinarian cannot communicate clearly and confidently, it can lead to confusion or a lack of trust. In addition, veterinary work often involves collaboration with technicians and other staff, which requires teamwork and leadership. Recognizing this has motivated me to step outside of my comfort zone and actively work on these skills.

To improve my communication skills, I plan to take advantage of everyday opportunities to practice. In college, I will challenge myself to participate more in class discussions, even when it feels uncomfortable. I also want to become more comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas during group projects instead of staying quiet. These small actions will help me build confidence over time. Another important part of my growth will be learning to communicate with clarity and purpose. I plan to work on organizing my thoughts before speaking so that I can express myself in a way that is both clear and effective.

In addition to speaking more, I want to become a better listener. Communication is not only about expressing ideas but also about understanding others. By practicing active listening, I can improve my ability to respond thoughtfully and build stronger connections with people. This skill will be especially important in a veterinary setting, where empathy and understanding play a large role in working with clients who may be worried about their animals.

Developing leadership skills is another goal that goes hand in hand with communication. While I may not see myself as a natural leader right now, I believe leadership can be learned through experience. I plan to start small by taking initiative in group settings, such as organizing tasks or helping guide discussions. Over time, these experiences will help me become more comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility. I also hope to learn from others by observing how strong leaders communicate, solve problems, and support their teams.

I know that improving in these areas will not happen overnight. It will require patience, consistency, and a willingness to face discomfort. There will likely be moments where I struggle or feel unsure of myself, but I am committed to pushing through those challenges. Growth often comes from stepping into situations that feel unfamiliar, and I am ready to take that step.

In the end, mastering communication and leadership is about more than personal improvement. It is about becoming someone who can make a positive impact on others. As a future veterinarian, I want to be able to support both animals and the people who care for them. By developing these skills, I will be better prepared to build trust, work effectively with others, and handle the responsibilities of my chosen career.
