Understanding How Babies Respond to Sound Before Birth by Sofia - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

One question that made me curious about the human body was whether babies can recognize or respond to sounds before they are born. I have always been interested in babies, and since I want to become a labor and delivery nurse, I wanted to learn more about how they develop before birth.

For my experiment, I wanted to explore how babies respond to different sounds during pregnancy. I compared familiar sounds, like their mother’s voice, with other everyday sounds. I looked at how babies might respond to these sounds and whether they could recognize familiar voices after birth. I wanted to understand how a baby’s hearing develops and when they begin responding to the world around them.

What I found interesting was that babies can hear sounds before they are born and become familiar with some of the voices they hear during pregnancy. I never really thought about how much babies could experience before they even entered the world. Learning about this made me more curious about pregnancy and how a baby’s brain and body develop.

This project also helped me understand why nurses need to know so much about pregnancy and a baby’s development. As a future labor and delivery nurse, I want to understand what is happening with both the mother and the baby so I can help provide the best care possible. I also want mothers to feel comfortable asking questions and know that someone is there to support them.

Overall, this project helped me connect my interest in babies to my interest in healthcare. It showed me that asking questions can help me learn things I never knew before. I know becoming a nurse will take a lot of studying and hard work, but I am willing to put in the effort because this is a career I genuinely want to pursue. In the future, I hope to use what I learn to help mothers feel safe and supported while caring for their babies during such an important time in their lives.
