Mastering the skill of playing guitar and singing together by Skye - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

In the next few years, I would love to master creating music. This is something that can only be achieved by consistent practice.

Mastering a skill is something that doesn't happen overnight. Or two nights. It takes weeks, months, or even years. Although takes time, mastering a skill feels like such an achievement when you've been putting in so much work, and you can start to see all the improvements you've made over time.

My favorite hobby is music, and I always wished that it would one day it would become more than a hobby. I love to sing, and I know there is always room for improvement. I recently decided to push myself further to the next step if I wanted to take it seriously, which I do. I signed up for voice lessons and I am really looking forward to seeing my improvement overtime. Making music has always brought me joy ever since I was little and I wrote my first song. I've made it a personal goal to write songs as much as I can. Doing this and giving myself the push I need forward to reach my goals allows me to see improvement throughout months and years of writing. During the past year or so, I had played the piano at my school with one of my friends, and it became a fun hobby. I have decided to take that seriously as well. I started playing songs at home on my keyboard and learning chords off of Youtube. Most recently, I am learning how to play the guitar. I believe that it isn't talked about enough of how fun and entertaining starting a new hobby can be. I play the guitar for hours at a time now, and I again find tutorials on Youtube, teaching me chords. I want to be able to sing while also playing either the piano or the guitar. I want to learn it good enough so when I sing my own songs, I can play music around it.

I'll continue to practice different aspects of each part, so I can soon put it all together, and then practice it all together, so the music as a whole will improve. I make it a part of my every day routine to practice the music that I make, because I know that the more I practice, the more I'll improve.
