A Project That Sparked My Curiosity by Shania - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
One experience that sparked my curiosity and helped me learn more about a subject was my time studying welding and learning how things are built. Before I started my welding program, I knew that welding was used to connect pieces of metal together, but I did not fully understand how much knowledge, patience, and skill went into doing it correctly. As I learned more, I became interested in how metalworking connects to other fields, especially automotive technology and custom cars.
During my welding education, I learned about different welding processes, including stick welding and MIG welding. I also learned that getting a strong weld takes more than just holding a welding gun or electrode. You have to understand the materials you are working with, control your movements, use the right settings, and pay attention to safety. Small mistakes can affect the strength and appearance of the finished product. This made me curious about how the same ideas apply to repairing, modifying, and building vehicles.
One thing that interested me was how important precision is when working with metal. In the automotive industry, a vehicle is made up of many parts that have to fit and work together properly. When someone customizes a car, they need to think about both its appearance and its safety. A modification might look good, but it also needs to be strong enough to handle the stress placed on it. This helped me understand why training and experience are so important when working on vehicles.
My welding education also taught me that learning does not stop when a class or project is finished. When something does not turn out the way you expected, you have to figure out what went wrong and find a way to improve. Instead of giving up, you learn from your mistakes and try again. This helped me become more patient and showed me the importance of paying attention to details. It also made me more interested in understanding how things work instead of just following instructions.
This experience deepened my interest in automotive technology because I started seeing how different skills can work together. Welding, mechanical knowledge, problem-solving, and creativity can all play a role in building or customizing a vehicle. I began to understand that the automotive industry offers opportunities to do more than repair cars. It also allows people to develop new ideas, improve existing designs, and create vehicles that reflect their own creativity.
Overall, my welding education helped me become more curious and motivated to keep learning. It taught me to ask questions, look for solutions, and understand the reasons behind the work I am doing. I want to continue building my knowledge in the automotive field and use what I learn to create quality work that is both functional and safe. This experience showed me that education is not just about passing a class. It is about discovering new interests, developing useful skills, and finding opportunities to turn those skills into something meaningful for the future.
