Helping a Classmate Find Confidence by Sebastian - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

One experience that taught me a lot about myself happened when I helped a classmate who was struggling in Physics. Physics and Sciences overall had always been one of my stronger subjects, but for my friend Richard, it was frustrating and confusing. Before a big test last year, Alex told me he felt like he was going to fail no matter how much he studied. Seeing how discouraged he felt made me want to help.
We started meeting after school a few days a week to not only hang out but also to review the material together. At first, Richard was nervous to ask questions because he thought they were “too simple.” I tried to explain concepts in different ways and reminded him that asking questions and making mistakes are how people learn. Sometimes we drew diagrams, and other times we broke problems down step by step. What surprised me was how much patience it took. I realized that understanding something yourself is different from helping someone else understand it.
Over time, Richard became more confident. On the day of the test, he still felt nervous, but he also felt more prepared. When he got his grade back, he had improved much more than he expected. Seeing his excitement made the time we spent studying feel completely worth it.
From this experience, I learned that I enjoy helping others learn and that patience (in teaching) is one of my strengths. I also realized that helping someone else succeed can be just as rewarding as achieving something yourself. Most importantly, it showed me that small acts of support, like giving your time and encouragement, can make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.
