Choosing My Own Path: What Murtagh Taught Me About Freedom by Scott - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
I have read many books, each book containing multiple characters with unique and compelling stories. But out of all of these books, one character stands out the most to me: Murtagh from the inheritance series. He starts out as a simple warrior avoiding the central conflict between a resistance and an evil king. He gets taken by the king and becomes an antagonist throughout the next few books. He was able to break free of the king's will and helped the protagonist defeat him. He left to go on his own path, finding evils around the world and stopping them before they became a bigger problem.
The main idea that I see throughout Murtagh's journey is that no one gets to tell you what you can or can’t do. You get to decide your own fate, whether it’s good or bad or even if you decide to help people along the way. You have control over your life and you get to decide how you should live it. Murtagh helps me remember that even if I'm not able to do everything that I want now, there is a day in the future when I can be free to go wherever I want and be free to do whatever I want to do.
I would like to conclude by saying his story inspires me to do good in life even if people don’t think I am good. The story tells me that there will always be a place where I am welcome and no matter what happens I am in control of my fate, I can be myself without worrying about what anyone else would think of me.
