Life Lessons in Cross Country Running by Savannah - May 2026 Scholarship Essay
For six years, I competed with the high school cross country team. As a beginning runner, it was effortless to set personal records at nearly every race. As my sophomore season approached, races became extremely difficult. Increased nerves and self-doubt prior to races repeatedly prevented my ability to run with ease and significantly slowed my pace. Each race became the same negative mental spiral. I consistently felt defeated and failed to progress in achieving new personal records.
Recognizing that failure does not define me or my abilities is what initially began the process to overcome mental blocks developed around cross country races. I had to acquire the ability to not internalize upcoming races and maintain an optimistic mindset throughout. This came through acknowledging an incredible support system, intentionally choosing positivity before each race, and altering the training plan with coaching staff. This was not simple and at times significantly challenging to rely on newly implemented goals while not returning to previous habits. In fact, my junior season was just as defeating, if not worse, than my sophomore season. Patience, trial and error, and persistence allowed for the ability to cross the finish line with pride. While not entirely over these challenges, I am consistently working on overcoming limiting beliefs. I am learning that obstacles require time, and the unknown duration can sometimes be the most difficult aspect. Patience is an imperative attribute to continuously build upon and strengthen in order to persevere through all elements of life. This experience has allowed for growth and understanding to know that I can excel past my perceived limitations.
