From Struggle to Strength by Sariah - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic subject that challenged me the most was math. For many years, I struggled to understand new concepts, and staying focused during lessons was difficult. I often found myself falling behind and becoming frustrated when I couldn’t solve problems as quickly as my classmates. There were times when I questioned my abilities, but I knew giving up would only make the challenge harder.

Instead of letting those struggles define me, I changed the way I approached learning. I began asking more questions, practicing problems outside of class, and taking my time to understand each step instead of rushing to find the answer. I also worked on improving my focus by limiting distractions and creating a study routine that helped me stay engaged.

Although math never became my easiest subject, overcoming those challenges strengthened my critical thinking skills. I learned how to analyze problems, break them into smaller steps, and remain patient when the solution was not immediately clear. Most importantly, I learned that success does not always come from natural talent—it comes from persistence, discipline, and a willingness to keep learning.

Those lessons have carried over into every area of my education. As I pursue a nursing degree, I know I will continue to face difficult coursework, but my experience with math has given me the confidence to approach challenges with determination instead of fear. It taught me that growth happens when I refuse to give up, and that mindset will continue to help me succeed both in college and throughout my future career as a nurse.
