One academic topic that initially challenged me but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills was titration curves in General Chemistry II. At first, I struggled because I approached the topic by trying to memorize patterns and recognize familiar graphs rather than truly understanding the chemical processes occurring at each stage. I found myself focusing on remembering where equivalence points or buffer regions appeared without fully understanding why those changes happened. Over time, I realized that successfully interpreting titration curves required a different approach. Instead of relying on memorized patterns, I began writing out every step of my thought process and connecting each calculation to the underlying chemical principles. I learned to ask questions such as: What species are present at this point? How are they interacting? Why does the pH change slowly or rapidly during this portion of the curve? By breaking down the problem conceptually, I was able to follow the progression of the reaction rather than simply identify a familiar shape. This shift transformed the way I approached chemistry problems. I became more comfortable working through unfamiliar questions because I was no longer dependent on recognizing a specific example from class. Instead, I developed the ability to analyze information, identify relationships, and build a solution from fundamental concepts. Learning titration curves taught me that true understanding comes from connecting ideas rather than memorizing outcomes. This skill has extended beyond chemistry and influenced how I approach other challenging scientific topics. As a biology student preparing for a career in healthcare, I know that critical thinking is essential because patients and clinical situations rarely follow a perfect pattern. The ability to analyze, adapt, and understand the reasoning behind a process will continue to help me throughout my education and future career.
