From Formulas to Logic: How Chemistry Honors Reshaped My Thinking by Saharsh - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
When I first started Honors Chemistry in the sophomore year of high school, I figured it would be pretty straightforward. I thought that as long as I memorized the periodic table and knew how to plug numbers into formulas, I would be fine. But that changed once we got to chemical equilibrium and reaction mechanisms. Suddenly, just memorizing things wasn’t working anymore. I remember staring for hours at these multi-step equations and feeling lost because just changing one tiny thing would shift the whole system in ways I didn't expect. I realized that my old habit of just memorizing facts wasn't going to cut it, and I had to actually change how I approached the class.
To get through this, I stopped looking at chemistry as just a list of rules to memorize and started seeing it as a system. Since I love coding, I started treating chemical reactions just as a piece of complex code. Instead of just guessing what the answer was, I started breaking the reactions down into smaller parts. I began tracing how one change, like a shift in temperature or pressure, affected almost everything else in the equilibrium reaction. Switching from reading the textbook blindly to actually analyzing the logic made a huge difference in the process.
This challenge eventually ended up helping me with things outside of the lab, too. By learning how to break down a scientific problem into cause-and-effect, I developed a way of thinking that I use in other parts of my life. For example, when I’m debugging a tough piece of JavaScript or building a database for a volunteer project, I use the same reasoning I learned in chemistry. Instead of panicking or looking for an immediate fix, I isolate the issue and approach the system in a holistic way.
Overall, dealing with Honors Chemistry taught me that being smart isn't about having all the answers right away. It's about having a method to figure things out when you're confused and stuck. What started as a frustrating class ended up being a big turning point for me, proving that I can handle complex topics as long as I stay patient and change my approach in the right direction.
