One of the most challenging and relevant courses I have taken in college is Managerial Accounting. Managerial Accounting focuses less on the numbers than Financial Accounting, which is probably why Financial Accounting was easier for me. Understanding the math and following the numbers is what made it significantly easier. Managerial Accounting is mostly about producing highly detailed reports to help run a business and make important decisions.
The concepts were mostly focused on three different parts: “Make vs. Buy”, “Taking a Custom Order”, and “Dropping or Adding a new line of Production”. These were the main concepts that my class would focus on, which were extremely difficult. We had to learn a crap ton of different formulas that we had to remember because we were not given a formula sheet. Since the class was 2302, you would think that it would build off of 2301, but it did not. So all the material I had learned the semester before didn’t even come in handy, nor did all the notes I spent countless hours taking.
While I was taking this course, I was working for my mother, who worked as an accountant for a 3rd Party Custodial Service company. This company is owned by my grandfather, who offered me a job to work under my mother, which gave me a great opportunity to do accounting work in real time. I got to do what I was learning in real life, getting real experience from an actual job. I was able to get a lot of good insider information that you can’t get from within the classroom. My mother would give me tips and tricks to help make my work run smoothly and help put the concepts I was learning into what I was actually doing.
This course will definitely help me in the future because I wanna own a Franchise. It will help me make decisions based on how much money I have to spend and the potential profits. I will be able to make rational decisions to grow my business and make as much money as possible. It will also help me make decisions for the future and plan ahead for the unexpected. This class has done a really good job at preparing me for owning or working for a business one day and being able to help it succeed.
