Tracing Evidence...Finding Direction by Ryan - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

What turned out to be a turning point of my educational career was not an ambitious idea or an inspiring experience but rather a rather simple question asked by me during my junior year. This simple question: “How do investigators find the truth when the evidence is not enough?” made me participate in a research which completely changed my understanding of justice, learning and my future.

In class, we were provided with a mock crime scene module conducted by our criminal justice teacher. Initially, this assignment seemed interesting since it included such activities as measuring footprints, analyzing the staged evidence, drawing a diagram and creating a timeline. However, while working on the module, I gradually understood that the notion of “truth” may become very fragile when one is required to prove it. The evidence contradicted one another; witness testimonies did not fit into the overall picture; the whole scene became a riddle.

That frustration fueled some other drive in me. Rather than throwing in the towel, I began reading into investigative techniques, chain of custody, trace evidence, avoiding bias, and how forensics are used to construct the truth from a crime scene. It wasn’t merely a case of trying to complete an assignment. It was a quest for knowledge and insight into how one can operate in uncertainty without succumbing to assumptions. The more I discovered, the more convinced I became that justice is not just about having all the answers but about the rigor that goes into earning them.

There is one specific part of the assignment that has made a great impression upon me. I had misunderstood one crucial piece of evidence at the beginning of the assignment, which resulted in me having the wrong timeline. When I finally realized my mistake, I was humiliated, yet in some way, emboldened as well. This gave me a great insight into what it takes to reach justice – one must be humble enough to question oneself, go back and admit his/her mistakes.

In the end, my final report was far from flawless, but it was truthful, detailed, and based on true methodology. What was more important, however, was the fact that the research project only made me more curious in ways I never imagined before. I began looking up forensic science articles on my own, seeing how real cases were broken down, and questioning how evidence determines the truth, and how the truth determines the fate of people's lives.

The lesson learned through this assignment reinforced my passion for learning CSI at NC A&T. Justice is not a straightforward process. It requires discipline, patience, and an inquisitive nature to solve cases like the one presented in the assignment. Inquisitiveness, which was born from a messy crime scene, remains the compass directing my learning objectives. It enables me to gain more knowledge and to equip myself for a future where I will be able to contribute to solving crime cases.

Ultimately, the assignment was not only important in giving me more insight into forensics but also into myself. It enabled me to understand how difficult and fascinating the process of finding the truth can be. It is something that I would like to do throughout my life.
