"Be Great.": A Promise to Myself by Rodney - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
Dear Current Me,
"Be Great."
You've heard those words from Dad for as long as you can remember. At first, they were just words--simple, powerful, but mysterious. As a kid, you didn't understand them. You thought greatness was something reserved for superheroes or famous people. But now, after a year at North Carolina A&T State University, you know better.
Greatness is waking up early to study for exams while balancing leadership roles and sports. It's staying up late to finish homework or a project because you promised yourself you'd never settle for mediocrity. It's stepping into rooms where no one looks like you and still speaking with confidence. Greatness is showing up--for yourself, your family, and your future.
This upcoming school year, you'll serve as Secretary of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Treasurer of the Charm City Aggies student organization. You'll know to continue to maintain your 3.8 GPA in the Honors College, proving that excellence isn't just a goal, but your standard. You'll lead, collaborate with others, and grow as a person. You'll make your mark not just on paper, but in the hearts of those who see your drive and believe in your story.
But remember. What motivates you most isn't your accomplishments or grades. It's the look in Dad's eyes when he sees you doing what you promised him. It's knowing that out of his five boys, you are the one who is on track to be the first to graduate. It's the quiet pride in Mom's voice when she tells people about her son at NC A&T and all of his achievements. You carry their dreams, their sacrifices, and their hopes. Every step you take is a step forward for your entire family.
You've already proven that you belong. Now, you're determined to thrive. You'll take every opportunity to learn, to lead, and to serve your community. You'll continue volunteering, building your tech skills, and preparing for graduate studies at the University of Maryland or Syracuse University. You'll chase your dream of working at Google, Microsoft, or Apple--not just to build technology, but to build a legacy.
So, current me, when things get tough--and they will--remember why you started. Remember Dad's words. Honor your family's name. And remember that greatness isn't about being perfect. It's about being persistent. It's about rising above, owning your path, and never giving up.
With pride,
Rodney from the Future
