Beyond the Clouds: Lifting Others and Finding My Own Ground by Rida - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

Helping someone navigate their mental health can be a deeply transformative experience both for them and the helping hand. A friend I once had we'll call Alexa was going through a particularly rough patch in her life. Alexa had always been a bit of a pessimist but lately it had became heavily overwhelming.Every conversation or text was filled with what she lacks, the what ifs, what could go wrong, and why things hadn't worked out the way she wanted to. As someone who didn't face the same problems as her it was a new look on life. It was draining for both of us but I knew I couldn't abandon her.
I started with small steps trying to inject moments of positivity into our interactions.Instead of dismissing her concerns I acknowledged them but then gently steered the conversation toward potential solutions or positive aspects, no matter how small. We began hanging out much more, going to our local mall, tanning days at our local pool, beach drives, the little jokes to hear her laugh, or the simple joys of beautiful rainy days during one of the hottest months in New York. It was challenging because Alexa would often always run back to the bottom of the hole, resisting and finding flaws even in the most beautiful experiences.Yet I persisted reminding her of her strengths, past accomplishments, and the people who deeply admired her.Overtime as the months went on I noticed a subtle shift. Alexa my dear friend had started to acknowledge the positive aspects of herself and her overall mood began to lift. She had begun to leave her house more often, play soccer again, post more on social media, and make new friends.
Throughout this experience I learned many profound lessons about myself. The power of patience and empathy. It easy to get frustrated with someone who constantly focuses on the negative but true help comes from understanding their pain and offering unwavering support .I also discovered that positivity is not about ignoring your problems and pushing them under your feet but finding the strength to face them with hope and resilience. Giving a helping hand to Alexa taught me the significance of celebrating small victories and appreciating the present moment, lessons that have enriched my own life immeasurably.
