A Challenge That Strengthened My Critical Thinking Skills

One academic topic that challenged me at first was learning about criminal justice and human behavior. Before studying this subject, I believed that understanding crime was mostly about knowing what happened and who was responsible. As I learned more, I discovered that human behavior is much more complex. Every person has different experiences, challenges, and circumstances that can influence their choices. This changed the way I think and taught me to look deeper instead of making quick judgments.

My interest in this topic became personal because of experiences that shaped the way I understand people and challenges. When I was 12 years old, my mother became seriously ill due to lupus and seizures. She had to learn how to walk and talk again, and our family had to adjust to a completely different situation. I had to grow up quickly and learn skills that many people my age did not have to learn. I learned how to drive and gained basic CNA skills so I could help take care of her. This experience taught me patience, responsibility, and the importance of understanding what someone may be going through before judging them.

During my junior year of high school, I also faced a difficult situation when I experienced being assaulted and felt that the people responsible for protecting students did not properly support me. Going through that experience showed me the importance of having people who will listen, advocate, and seek the truth. Instead of allowing that moment to define me, I used my voice through writing. I wrote a poem called “Hear Us Out,” which was later published in a poetry book. Writing helped me express my thoughts and showed me the power of speaking up for myself and others.

These experiences strengthened my critical thinking skills because they taught me to analyze situations from different perspectives, search for answers, and understand the importance of fairness. They also inspired my future goals of becoming a criminal profiler or child psychologist. Both careers require compassion, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to understand people’s behaviors and experiences.

Overall, what started as a challenging academic topic became something that shaped my future. Criminal justice and psychology have taught me that every situation has a deeper story, and true understanding comes from listening, learning, and looking beyond what is immediately visible.
