The Power of Staying Organized by Raleigh - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

One small habit that has contributed significantly to my success in school and in life is the practice of staying organized. Although this may seem like a very simple thing, having an organized environment has helped me stay on track and get tasks done effectively. To me, staying organized is more than just having a clean room; it is a way of thinking that allows me to feel composed and ready to take on whatever it is that I need to accomplish. I have always enjoyed having a clean space where everything has its place. When my space is clean, my mind feels clearer and more organized, but when it is cluttered, I feel disorganized and anxious.

Living with ADHD makes it difficult to focus on one thing at a time, but I have learned ways to work with my brain instead of against it. One thing that helps me is listening to music while doing homework or cleaning my room. Listening to music allows me to stay focused and helps me stay on top of my work. Keeping a clean physical space helps me stay in a calm mental state, which allows me stay on top of my work without getting overwhelmed about it.

Organization has also become something that I look forward to doing, something that I enjoy, instead of only completing. I will often help my friends organize their rooms because I find it satisfying to take chaos and turn it into something neat and give it a purpose. This has affected my academic life as well as my personal life by helping me develop my ability to deal with challenges and stay calm no matter how difficult the task might be.
