Learning Through Feedback: Growing Beyond My First Attempt by R'riana - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
One of the most important lessons I have learned about personal growth is that feedback is not meant to tell me that I am not good enough. Instead, it is an opportunity to learn, improve, and become better than I was before. I learned this when I received feedback on something I had worked hard on. At first, I felt disappointed because I had put a lot of effort into it and believed I had done a good job. Hearing that there were things I could improve was difficult because I naturally wanted my hard work to be recognized.
After taking some time to think about the feedback, I realized that the person giving it was not trying to discourage me. They were pointing out areas where I could grow. I began to understand that effort is important, but being willing to learn from mistakes is just as important. Instead of focusing on what I had done wrong, I started focusing on what I could do differently the next time.
This experience changed the way I approach learning. I became more comfortable asking questions, listening to constructive criticism, and considering perspectives that are different from my own. I also learned not to take every correction personally. Sometimes, feedback can reveal something about ourselves that we may not notice on our own.
As I begin my college journey, I know I will face new challenges and situations where I will not immediately have all the answers. I want to carry this lesson with me by remaining open-minded and willing to learn from my professors, classmates, mentors, and my own experiences. I now understand that growth does not come from being perfect; it comes from being willing to improve.
Learning how to accept feedback has helped me become more confident in my ability to grow. Instead of seeing feedback as a judgment of my abilities, I now see it as guidance that can help me reach my goals.
