Overcoming The Storm by Quianna - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

For a long time, finishing my degree felt like a mountain I wasn’t sure I could climb. Like many students, I started my academic journey with a clear plan, but life eventually intervened. Personal loss and several deaths in my family created a season of grief that made focusing on coursework feel nearly impossible. I realized that to honor my goals and my family, I couldn’t just "power through". I had to take a step back and regroup.

The challenges didn't disappear, but I changed how I approached them. During my break, I took control of the logistics that had once felt overwhelming. I negotiated a sustainable payment plan for my tuition and intentionally chose a course load that allowed me to maintain a standard of excellence. This more deliberate pace gave me the space to earn straight As and proved to me that I was capable of high-level academic work even under significant pressure.

The most important change, however, was my perspective. I stopped seeing my time away from school as a failure and started seeing it as fuel. The hurdles I endured sharpened my focus and solidified my desire to succeed. My personal history is no longer just a story of survival. It has become the motivation for my professional future. I am no longer just a student trying to finish a degree, I am a future advocate preparing for the rigors of the legal profession.

Today, the goal that once felt intimidating is finally within reach. I am finishing my final six classes and am only three weeks away from taking the LSAT. My plan is to graduate this year and enter law school in the Fall of 2027. This scholarship would provide the final bridge I need to complete my Bachelor’s degree. I have moved from a place of uncertainty to a place of execution, and I am ready to turn my hard-won resilience into a career dedicated to helping others navigate their own challenges.
