A lesson in Resilience by Priscila - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most meaningful times I helped someone was during these past years while my mom was recovering from cancer. When she first got sick, everything at home felt different. My dad is retired, so he is doing his best to take care of everyone, but I could tell he was getting stressed and tired. I realized that instead of just waiting for things to go back to how they were, I needed to help my family.
I started doing a lot more around the house without being asked. I took over doing laundry, kept the house clean, and sometimes helped make dinner. On the days when my mom felt really weak from her treatments, I would stay in her room to keep her company. I'd bring her whatever she wanted and tell her random stories to make her laugh. Even though I had a lot of homework, I wanted to make sure she felt supported and not alone.
Through this experience, I learned that I am a lot stronger and more responsible than I thought. I used to think "helping" meant doing one big thing, but I realized it's actually about the small things you do every day. I learned that I can stay calm even when things are stressful, and that being there for the people you love is the most important job you can have.
Helping my mom and dad taught me what empathy really means. It made me want to work even harder in my classes because I want to make them proud after everything they've sacrificed. This experience changed me from just being a kid to being someone my family can count on.
