Physics Did Not Define Me by Peyton - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
When people ask me what the most challenging academic subject for me, my answer is always PHYS 101 (college physics). It was the one class that constantly pushed me outside of my comfort zone and forced me to rethink how I approached learning. Although I have always loved science, physics challenged me in ways biology and chemistry never did. It was the first course that taught me intelligence alone is not enough.
As an Early College student, I was taking college- evel courses while still completing high school. I knew the workload would be demanding, but I underestimated just how different physics would be from every other science class I had taken. I entered the course expecting to memorize equations and solve problems similar to physics 9. Instead, I quickly realized physics required me to understand the reasoning behind every formula and apply concepts to situations I had never seen before. Every problem felt like a puzzle, and simply remembering equations was not enough.
There were times when I left class feeling frustrated because I could not immediately understand a concept that seemed to come naturally to others. For someone who has always held herself to high academic standards, that was difficult. I had to accept that learning is not always immediate and that struggling with a subject does not mean I am incapable of succeeding in it.
Instead of allowing that frustration to discourage me, I changed my approach. I spent extra time reviewing notes, worked through practice problems repeatedly, worked outside of school with friends, and asked questions whenever I was confused. I stopped focusing on simply getting the correct answer and started focusing on understanding why the answer was correct. That shift changed everything. While physics never became my favorite subject and my final grade didn't reflect my improvement, I became a much stronger student because of it.
More importantly, physics transformed the way I think. It taught me to break complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces instead of becoming overwhelmed by the bigger picture. It taught me patience when solutions were not immediately obvious and resilience when I made mistakes. Rather than seeing setbacks as failures, I began viewing them as opportunities to improve my understanding.
Those critical thinking skills have carried over into every area of my education. Whether I am conducting research, analyzing scientific data, or solving problems in other courses, I approach challenges with more confidence and curiosity than I did before. Instead of asking, “Why is this so difficult?” or not trusting my ability, I now ask, “What can I learn from this?”
As I prepare to attend Temple University this fall as a Biology major on the pre-med track, I know these lessons will continue to benefit me. Medicine requires physicians to think critically, evaluate evidence, solve complex problems, and remain calm under pressure. Patients rarely present textbook cases, and every diagnosis requires careful reasoning. Physics taught me that success comes from asking thoughtful questions, analyzing information carefully, and refusing to give up when the answer is not immediately clear.
Looking back, I no longer see college physics as the class that challenged me the most. Instead, I see it as the class that changed the way I learn. It strengthened my perseverance, sharpened my analytical thinking, and reminded me that growth often comes from the subjects we find the hardest. Those lessons will stay with me throughout college, medical school, and ultimately my career as a pediatrician, where critical thinking and determination will be just as important as scientific knowledge.
