A Heart of Thanks. by Noel - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
One small habit that has made a meaningful difference in both my academic and personal success is starting each day with gratitude. Before I reach for my phone or begin thinking about responsibilities, I pause for a few quiet moments to reflect on what I am thankful for. Sometimes I journal which really helps me get the thoughts out in clear way. I intentionally focus on simple, grounding things. I think about my family, whose steady support and belief in me have shaped my confidence. I think about my friends, whose encouragement and presence bring balance during demanding seasons. I remind myself that I have shelter, safety, and the freedom to pursue my goals.
At the center of this practice is my awareness of the love of God. My faith and my relationships are what anchor my gratitude. They remind me that even on uncertain or stressful days, I am not navigating life alone. This perspective creates a foundation of stability. Instead of measuring my worth by productivity or outcomes, I begin the day grounded in a sense of purpose, connection, and trust.
This routine has gradually changed the way I approach my education. Studying nursing is rigorous and challenging, and it can be easy to become consumed by pressure, deadlines, and self-doubt. Beginning the day with gratitude reframes my mindset. I remember that the ability to continue my education and pursue nursing is not something I take for granted. It is an opportunity to grow, to serve, and to develop skills that can genuinely impact others.
Gratitude also heightens my awareness of everyday beauty. Some mornings it is a warm breeze, sunlight through the window, or the quiet stillness of falling snow. These small moments cultivate calm and presence, which carry into my studies and interactions throughout the day.
Most importantly, this habit strengthens my resilience. Gratitude does not remove challenges, but it steadies me. It helps me remain focused, motivated, and connected to the deeper reasons behind my pursuit of nursing and continued education. Over time, this simple practice has shaped not only how I perform academically, but how I experience my life.
