Ping-ponging to Destiny by Nhan - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

The 2.7-gram plastic ball zipped back and forth on the table at blistering speeds. It’s a blur to untrained eyes. To me, ping pong is a high-risk wargame where a decisive strike becomes a chance for the untrained to breach the most formidable. Tension between a familiar opponent and me was high. My morale slowly diminished as the score spread apart: ten to five. After serving the ball, I advanced closer to the table to ensure he wouldn’t pull off an unexpected attack. Then, the ball came in hot, hitting my side before whizzing past me, all in the blink of an eye, followed by dismay. This was the same tactical error I always overlooked. After the game, I felt shame and frustration. For the first time since beginning this sport, I felt hopelessly outgunned by a new set of techniques brought to this blue ocean of flat fiberboard, yet I wasn’t ready to abandon the game.
The weight of defeat lingered around me since that ping pong game. Documentaries of the underdog American victory at the Battle of Samar resurfaced due to the parallel nature of the two. What’s not pleasant was the inevitable reality of the table’s future: The fight for dominance on its vast, flat surface for the coming months would be fierce; thus, my strategy was insufficient to return the fire my adversary would throw. Desperate for answers, I swept across the broad internet for advice I could grasp and use on the table. Eventually, I came across a video and absorbed the secret of what was once impossible to tame: Timing, precision, patience, and even stoicism, all broken down into simple phrases and moving pictures. Standing before my dusty table with nothing but a dull wall ahead, I tested these new methods, rewatched the professional’s elegant yet complex moves frequently, and sharpened my mastery to my heart’s content throughout the night. Lying in my room, tired from a hard day’s work, I felt a sense of euphoria flooding the murky stillness: The tables would soon begin to turn the tide.
Preparing to play the next morning, I faced the familiar atmosphere as my renowned opponent stood across the table. In a flash, a game was underway; he served the ball, I returned it, and he retaliated. The ball crashed into the net and landed short on my side. I stepped forward and placed the ball short on his side before he struck, followed by my return. The flow continued until he struck the impervious net and failed to bombard my side. I felt a spike of elation; I finally dealt a major blow to vessels beyond my size. But celebrations were soon run over by sheer force. My aggressive calculations slowly faltered as ball after ball pounded the table and whizzed by. Minutes later, I was on the brink of another perishing defeat once again: Ten to eight. Holding the tiny white ball, preparing to deliver my final defiant throw before sinking, I revisited an overlooked aspect that changed how I now interpret not just ping-pong, but the epochs laying ahead in my future.
Growing up, my path wasn’t always calm seas; it was facing family issues and arguments from my undoings. As a curious being who explores uncommon stuff, I felt paralyzed at a horizon with infinite possibilities. Yet, that overlooked aspect turned it into a blank sheet of potential. I saw my lifespan, much like my plays, as virtually any masterpiece I decide to make, whether it’s being a pilot, engineer, or anything matching my interests. Standing amidst the crowd, I tossed the ball sky high. Life is a game that responds erratically. It’s up to me how I start this rally; it’s up to me how I answer what follows; it’s up to me how I outline my existence; thus, I’m ready to face whatever life decides to throw at me.
