From Representation to Action by Naleli - December 2025 Scholarship Essay

If elected student body president my goal would be to give our minority led clubs more of a platform and incorporate it more into our school'S student life. As the vice president of the Black Student Union (BSU) at a predominantly white school, I have seen the gaps in how students voices are heard. I would like to create a more inclusive, represented and unified school community as a result. I would ensure that all minority-led clubs are given the respect and visibility they deserve within our school culture.

My school prides itself on community and involvement, but simply having clubs that recognize student's culture and identities is not enough. These clubs are often only recognized and highlighted during specific heritage months or special events, rather than being incorporated into everyday student life, If elected I would would work to change that by collaborating with the other minority-led clubs and the school's administration to ensure that our perspectives are actively included and acknowledged within decisions, events, and conversations within our community.

One of my top priorities would be increasing participation from our white peers. I would advocate for more opportunities for the clubs to showcase their hard work through assemblies, student lead panels, and even through our school's social media. Promoting the clubs through these various platforms would increase engagement as well as members. By normalizing these conversations, we can move beyond surface-level inclusion and more towards genuine activism and alliance.

Additionally, minority-led clubs are often underfunded. I would work with the school administration to ensure that resources are evenly distributed, so that our clubs can also reap the benefits of their work. As student body president, I would use my voice to create equitable support, helping these clubs thrive rather than simply just exist. I know from personal experience when students feel supported, they are more likely to engage and contribute to school life.

In conclusion, if I was elected student body president I would make sure everyone is included. This means being seen, heard, and valued. My experience as a member of BSU and recently as vice president of BSU has taught me how powerful representation and advocacy can be. I would bring dedication and passion to serve the entire student body, working to create an inclusive school community that reflects and respects the diversity and culture within it.
