One Piece of Advice to My Past Self-NMack by Nakia - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

If I could give one piece of advice to my past self, it would be this: Give yourself grace you’re doing better than you think.

There were so many moments in my younger years where I let doubt take up too much space. I questioned whether I was smart enough, strong enough, or even enough at all. I compared myself to others, second-guessed my decisions, and sometimes felt like I had to be perfect to be worthy. But looking back, I realize that the pressure I placed on myself didn’t make me better it only made me tired.

I would tell my past self that it’s okay to stumble, to not have it all figured out, and to grow at your own pace. That every setback will teach you something valuable, and every tough moment is building strength you’ll need later. I’d remind her that there’s no timeline for success and that her worth is not defined by grades, titles, or how much she can handle without breaking.

Most importantly, I’d tell her that she is becoming someone powerful, even in the quiet moments when no one is clapping. So breathe, trust yourself, and keep going you’ve got this.
