A letter across time by Naila - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

If I could give advice to my younger self, I would say: Believe in your worth, even when it feels like no one else does. Growing up as a Nigerian Muslim from a low-income household, I often felt out of place and underestimated. I thought my background meant I was starting life at a disadvantage I could never overcome.

I would remind my old self that those challenges are not proof of weakness—they are the foundation of strength. Every time you feel unseen or unheard, know that you are building resilience and empathy that many people will never fully understand. Those qualities will one day become your greatest assets.

I would also tell myself not to be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s reaching out to mentors, applying for scholarships, or simply sharing your struggles with someone you trust, you don’t have to carry everything alone.

Most importantly, I would say: You are allowed to dream big. Your circumstances do not define your potential. One day, you will use your education and your story to open doors for others who feel the same doubt you once did. Keep going. You are capable of so much more than you realize.
