Spreading my wings by Muma - January 2026 Scholarship Essay
For much of my life, survival came before self discovery. I learned early how to be strong, responsible, and aware of the weight that circumstances can place on a young person. Yet growth does not come from standing still. It comes from motion, courage, and the decision to rise even when fear is present. Spreading my wings is not just about leaving what is familiar it is about trusting myself enough to soar beyond it.
I grew up understanding that stability is not guaranteed. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for me, and although she is the strongest woman I know, life often demanded more from her than it should have. Watching her navigate her own trauma while still showing up for me taught me resilience, but it also taught me empathy. I learned that people can love deeply even while struggling, and that hardship does not define character—response does. These early lessons shaped my perspective and planted the seed of responsibility within me.
As I grew older, I began to understand that my role was not just to endure, but to evolve. During the summer, despite dealing with anxiety and internal doubt, I chose to work so I could help support my household and send money to my mother during a difficult time. It was not easy. There were days when fear whispered that I was not capable, that I was too young or too overwhelmed. But every shift I completed felt like a small victory—proof that courage is not the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward anyway. That summer marked the first time I realized my wings were stronger than I believed.
Education became another space where I learned to stretch those wings. I challenged myself academically and creatively, using school as both an escape and a launchpad. Writing, research, and advocacy allowed me to find my voice, especially in spaces where young people—particularly young Black women—are often underestimated. I discovered the power of storytelling not only as a form of expression, but as a tool for change. Through projects, essays, and service-based work, I began to understand that my experiences were not weaknesses, but sources of insight.
Service has played a central role in my growth. Volunteering and engaging in advocacy taught me the importance of using my voice for those who may not always be heard. Learning about issues such as autism awareness and mental health advocacy opened my eyes to the ways communities can uplift one another through compassion and action. In these moments, I wasn’t just helping others I was learning who I am and who I want to become. Each experience added a feather to my wings, preparing me for greater responsibility.
Spreading my wings also means embracing independence while honoring where I come from. I carry my family’s sacrifices with me, not as a burden, but as fuel. Their struggles motivate me to aim higher, to break cycles, and to build a future rooted in purpose. I aspire to pursue higher education not only to achieve personal success, but to create opportunities for impact particularly in the areas of mental health, service, and representation. I want to be someone who shows others that growth is possible, even when the odds seem heavy.
Scholarships represent more than financial assistance to me; they represent belief. Belief that potential deserves opportunity, and that determination should be met with support. This scholarship would allow me to focus on learning, leadership, and service without the constant worry of financial strain. It would give me the freedom to continue spreading my wings to explore, to learn, and to give back more fully.
As I prepare for the next chapter of my life, I am no longer afraid of the unknown. I have learned that wings are built through perseverance, empathy, and faith in oneself. Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my resolve and clarified my purpose. I am ready to fly not away from my past, but because of it.
Spreading my wings means stepping into my future with confidence, gratitude, and a commitment to rise while lifting others with me. And with the support of this scholarship, I am prepared to soar.
