A childhood to remember for the future by Morgan - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
To really grasp my journey with kids, you have to step into my childhood shoes. I was a quiet, anxious kid, easily swept away by the noise and chaos of the world. That early sensitivity colored how I saw things as I grew up. For years, I shied away from children, put off by their energy and messiness, barely able to manage my own feelings, much less theirs. But over time, I discovered that shifting from avoidance to truly understanding children's emotions is a powerful transformation.
Even though I once avoided children, working with them has become a calling I cannot ignore. Kids may not always have the answers, but that is exactly why being part of their journey matters so much to me. I want to make a difference, whether it is in a single room or out in the world. This passion has drawn me to pediatric nursing, where I hope to support kids who feel lost or overwhelmed, just as I once did. Life throws challenges at all of us, and I want to help children find joy as they rise above theirs.
One memory from my time volunteering at church stands out. There was a little girl, about four years old, whose world revolved around the color purple. Every Sunday, as her parent left for the 'big kid service,' she would cling to them, her eyes brimming with worry at being left behind with unfamiliar faces and confusing activities. I made it my mission to brighten her day, guiding her through crafts and games, and sometimes surprising her with purple-themed drawings or tiny gifts. These small gestures always brought a smile to her face. It amazed me how something so simple could mean so much. Now, that little girl is in fifth grade, full of joy and surrounded by friends, and I feel lucky to have been a part of her journey.
Supporting children through their toughest moments is deeply meaningful to me. Guiding them from critical care to resilience and watching them chase their dreams is a privilege. Everyone’s journey is unique, and even the smallest effort to brighten a child’s life during a difficult time feels worthwhile. I want to spend my life helping others overcome their challenges, doing everything I can to support people when they need it most.
