Good Habit by Morgan - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
A habit that has helped me with academic success is practicing the Pomodoro Technique. The Pomodoro Technique is a study technique that teaches you to do 25 minutes of focused work and then take a 5-minute break. In order to practice it, I use the timer on my phone. I make sure it is placed on airplane mode, so I do not have any distractions. For 25 minutes I am completely focused on my work. When the timer goes off, I set the timer again for 5 minutes and take a break. During those 5 minutes, I will get up, stretch, or get a snack. What I have learned not to do during my break is use my cell and get on social media or check messages. Once my break is up, I reset timer again for 25 minutes. It works because when some tasks feel overwhelming, I try to avoid doing it. If I only plan on committing 25 minutes to the task, it does not feel too bad. Using this method allows me to have more consistent study sessions and not procrastinate. With all the distraction in the world, I noticed it also has helped me improve my concentration span. I truly recommend this study technique to anyone trying to learn.
