Finding My Strength in the Spotlight by MOLLY - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

I discovered a new strength in myself, not in a classroom or through a test, but on stage, surrounded by music, movement, and the shared energy of performance. Through theatre, band, dance, and movement-based volunteering, I realized that my greatest strength is my ability to adapt, work with others, and support the people around me. What began as a creative outlet slowly became a meaningful part of who I am and how I approach challenges.

My involvement in performance began at a young age through Theater for Young Audiences. From 2015 to 2020, I participated in acting, props, and set work. At first, I was simply excited to be involved and to create something alongside others. As productions became more demanding, I began to understand how much responsibility performance requires. Rehearsals were long, expectations were high, and every role mattered. When scenes changed at the last minute, props went missing, or someone needed encouragement, I often found myself stepping in to help. These moments taught me how to remain calm under pressure and support others without needing recognition.

That strength continued to grow through my involvement in band, especially while performing with the Sheboygan Pops Concert Band. The Pops Band performs free community concerts throughout the year, which gives each performance a strong sense of purpose. I am one of the youngest members of the group, performing alongside seasoned musicians who bring years of experience to every rehearsal. Being welcomed into a group of older performers pushed me to rise to a higher level of musicianship. They trusted my abilities, challenged me with difficult music, and held me to the same expectations as every other member of the ensemble.

Each Pops performance requires learning close to ten new pieces of music in a short period of time, often within a week or two. This fast pace strengthened my discipline and focus, forcing me to manage my time carefully and prepare independently outside of rehearsals. As a percussionist, I learned how to stay flexible, listen closely, and adjust quickly during performances that featured a wide range of musical styles. These experiences taught me that growth often comes from being challenged and trusted to meet high expectations.

Dance and movement became another important part of my growth, particularly through my volunteer work assisting with movement classes. Working with participants of different ages and abilities taught me patience, empathy, and flexibility. I learned how to encourage others in ways that felt supportive rather than overwhelming and how to adapt activities so everyone could feel successful. Seeing the confidence that movement and expression gave participants reinforced the importance of meeting people where they are and celebrating progress, no matter how small.

Over time, I noticed that these performance experiences influenced other areas of my life. I became more comfortable speaking in front of groups, more confident stepping into leadership roles, and more willing to offer help when it was needed. Performance taught me how to listen carefully, respond thoughtfully, and remain grounded when things do not go as planned.

These experiences have shaped my academic and career goals by showing me the power of supportive and collaborative environments. Whether on stage, in rehearsal, or volunteering, I learned that encouragement and adaptability allow people to grow. The strength I discovered through performance continues to guide me as I move forward as a student, mentor, and future professional. Through theatre, band, community Pops performances, and movement-based volunteering, I found not only creative expression but a strength that continues to shape who I am and how I support others.
