Reflect on a time you helped someone in a meaningful way-what did you learn about yourself from that experience? by Miley - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

A time that I helped someone in a meaningful way was in my 6th grade history class. We had a project and had to present in front of the class. I recently moved to the school so I knew no one and definitely no one in this class. I and a few others presented on the first day. After I was done my teacher, Mr. Kennedy, asked if I could help this girl with presenting hers tomorrow. I really didn't want to present and be in front of the class again, but I said sure. I introduced myself that next day and told her that I'll be helping her present. She was really excited and thankful. We both went up and I stood behind the poster board and if she needed help I was there to help her. She asked me how to pronounce a few words, other than that, she did great. I think just being there helped her a lot. From that experience I learned that I enjoy helping people when they are in need and struggling. Not in the sense of teaching people but knowing that I'm helping someone while they are struggling makes me feel better about myself. I have always thought I was useless but in that moment I realized I’m not and I am far from it.
