From Pressure to Purpose by Mikaila - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

For much of my childhood, I believed fitting in was a form of success. Growing up as one of the only Black girls in my predominantly white town, I became conscious of how I spoke, behaved, and presented myself. I learned to speak “properly,” stay quiet when I had something to say, and avoid anything that might reinforce the stereotypes I feared others associated with me. My father often reminded me that I might have to work twice as hard to receive the same recognition. At first, I saw his words as pressure. Eventually, I understood them as preparation.

Instead of allowing that pressure to make me smaller, I began using it to challenge myself. I enrolled in rigorous courses, became more willing to speak up, and pursued leadership opportunities through my school, church, and community. More importantly, I began questioning the belief that I needed to change myself to be accepted. My father’s feedback taught me that constructive criticism does not always feel encouraging at first. Sometimes, it challenges you to confront uncomfortable truths and recognize potential you have not yet seen in yourself.

That lesson has shaped how I approach both academics and personal growth. I no longer view feedback as proof that I am falling short. I see it as an opportunity to improve, reflect, and become more confident in who I am. I have learned that growth requires humility, the willingness to admit there is always more to learn, and courage, the willingness to act on what I learn. The feedback that once felt like pressure ultimately taught me how to turn discomfort into determination, and that is a lesson I will carry with me throughout college and beyond.
