How Does a Machine Learn to Write? by Matthew - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

The question that grabbed me was a simple one: how does a machine learn to write?

I want to become an AI agent developer, so I started digging into how language models actually work. I had no background in this, so I started from the ground up. I learned that a model does not understand words the way people do. It breaks language into pieces called tokens, then predicts which piece is most likely to come next, millions of times, trained on more text than a person could read in a thousand lifetimes.

That changed how I think about writing itself. When I write about my faith or my life, every sentence carries weight because I lived it. A machine has not lived anything. It is powerful, but it is still just guessing well. That understanding made me want to build tools that serve people instead of replacing the human parts of them.

The research also taught me something about myself. For six years I did not study anything except survival. Now I can sit with a hard subject, take it apart piece by piece, and put it back together in my own words. That is what a college education is supposed to do, and I am just getting started.
