Between Shades of Life by Marleni - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

One important lesson I learned from the mother in Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is the power of love, sacrifice, and perseverance. Even after being taken from her home and forced into a harsh labor camp, she continues to give everything she can to her children. She shares her food, comforts them, and holds on to hope, even when the situation seems impossible. Her strength shows that true courage isn’t just about surviving, it’s about caring for others, protecting them, and continuing to believe in a better future, even when life seems unfair.

As a first-generation Hispanic college student, I see a reflection of her story in my own life. My parents have made countless sacrifices so that I could have opportunities they never had. They work tirelessly and face challenges quietly, always putting my future first. Seeing their dedication reminds me of the mother in the book, and it helps me appreciate the power of perseverance and unconditional love. Her story encourages me to keep going, even when I feel overwhelmed or unsure about the path ahead.

This lesson is especially meaningful because it shows that strength can take many forms. It isn’t always loud or obvious; sometimes, it’s quiet, patient, and full of love. The mother’s resilience teaches me that I can face difficulties without losing hope or giving up on the people I care about. Her courage inspires me to stay determined in my studies, remain grateful for my family’s sacrifices, and continue striving toward my goals.

Through her example, I’ve learned that love and perseverance are powerful forces. They help us survive hardships, protect the people we care about, and keep hope alive, even in the darkest times.
