One Academic Topic Challenge by Maria - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that challenged me at first was algebra. In the beginning, I struggled to understand why solving equations required so many steps. I often became frustrated when I arrived at the wrong answer, even after spending a long time working on a problem. Instead of seeing math as a way to solve problems, I saw it as a series of confusing rules that were difficult to remember.

As I continued taking math classes, I realized that my biggest obstacle was not my ability to learn but my mindset. I expected to understand new concepts immediately, and when I did not, I assumed I was simply "bad at math." Eventually, I decided to change the way I approached the subject. Rather than rushing to find the answer, I focused on understanding why each step worked. I practiced consistently, reviewed my mistakes, and asked questions whenever I was confused. Over time, concepts that once seemed impossible became manageable.

This experience strengthened my critical thinking skills because I learned to analyze problems instead of reacting emotionally to them. When I made a mistake, I stopped viewing it as failure and started treating it as information that could help me improve. I learned to break complex problems into smaller parts, recognize patterns, and evaluate different approaches before deciding on the best solution. Those are skills that extend far beyond mathematics.

The lessons I learned from algebra have influenced the way I approach challenges in other subjects and in everyday life. Whether I am researching career options, balancing work and school responsibilities, or learning new technical skills, I use the same process: identify the problem, gather information, think through possible solutions, and keep improving until I succeed. I have learned that persistence and thoughtful problem-solving are often more important than finding an immediate answer.

These critical thinking skills will also be valuable as I pursue a degree in Biomedical Technology. Professionals in this field must diagnose equipment problems, interpret technical information, and make careful decisions that support patient care. Success depends on logical reasoning, attention to detail, and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems.

Looking back, I am grateful that algebra did not come easily to me. If it had, I might never have learned the value of perseverance or developed the confidence to work through difficult challenges. What once felt like my weakest subject became one of my greatest teachers. It showed me that growth often begins where comfort ends, and that every difficult problem is an opportunity to become a stronger, more thoughtful learner.
