From Fear to Fire: A Letter to My Younger Self by Marco - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

To me, 10 years ago:
As you can imagine, a lot has happened in the last decade. You've been shaped by the things you went through, the people who stuck by you, and those who didn't. Our parents have done their best to support us, even when we didn't see it. You've learned the hard way who your real friends are and which ones were using you. But somehow, through all that, you found a solid group of people—ones you never expected—who've helped you grow. You've gone to events you'd never imagined yourself at and started working out to better yourself, and now you're finally chasing a dream that you haven't even fully realized yet.
But if I could give you just one solid piece of advice, it'd be this:
Enjoy your time, and stop letting fear control you. Don't be afraid to look dumb, mess up, or feel embarrassed—do the things you want to do, and if you do them, give it 100%. No half-steps. Go all in.
Also—pick up some skills and hobbies early. Not just to kill time but to meet people, explore, and open doors you didn't even know existed. You'll be shocked how a random interest can lead to life-changing connections.
And listen—when you find someone you truly vibe with, whether it's a friend or something more, don't let pride or ego mess it up. Just be you. Keep it real. If it feels genuine, don't run from it—embrace it.
Avoid falling into toxic habits. There is a lot of stuff out there that can poison your mind and wreck your body. Learn to control your urges and stay sharp. Be better for yourself, not anyone else.
Oh—and start studying seriously now. You're naturally smart, but that won't carry you forever. Once things get harder, it will hit hard if you're not prepared. Build your discipline early so you're ready for the pressure when it comes.
Most importantly, Live. Really Live. The years are going to fly by faster than you think. One day, you'll be able to blink and realize that a whole season of your life is gone. Make it count. Build friendships, set tangible goals, love fiercely, stay curious, and never stop chasing adventure.
If you do all that, you will enjoy this life more than you ever thought possible.
With love and respect,
You — ten years later
