Looking for the year by Makieh - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

As I prepare for the upcoming school year at Richard Bland College, I’m entering with a clear set of goals and the motivation to push through any obstacles. My main aspiration is to grow both academically and personally. I want to become more confident in my studies, especially as I continue toward my degree in Computer Science. Last year wasn’t easy there were moments I felt lost, especially when I wasn’t placed in the right classes or fully supported by advising. But this year, I want to take control of my education and make sure I get the most out of every opportunity.

One of my biggest goals is to stay on top of my coursework and maintain strong grades. I know college can get overwhelming, but I’m learning how to manage my time better and ask for help when I need it. I also want to connect more with my professors and classmates. Being part of a community where I can learn and grow makes a big difference for me. It’s not just about passing classes it’s about preparing for my future. I want to leave Richard Bland ready to transfer to VCU, confident in both my skills and my mindset.

What motivates me most is my desire to prove to myself that I’m capable of achieving great things in school, even if my path hasn’t always been the smoothest one. I’ve had setbacks but I’ve also learned from them. I’m driven by the thought of building a better life for myself and making my family proud. They’ve supported me in quiet ways and I want to show them that their belief in me wasn’t wasted.

This school year is a fresh start. I’m motivated by growth by the idea of becoming someone who doesn’t give up, even when things get tough. I know it won’t be perfect nor will I be, but I’m ready to show up, do the work, and keep moving forward at Richard Bland
