From Uncertainty to Opportunity by Makayla - May 2026 Scholarship Essay

The opportunities I have today are a direct result of one decision: choosing to step outside of my comfort zone. When I first arrived at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, I struggled with being five hours away from home and adjusting to college life. For months, I only left my dorm room to attend class and avoided doing things alone, even something as simple as going to the cafeteria. Over time, however, I realized that growth would only come if I allowed myself to be intentional about meeting people and becoming involved on campus.

As I slowly started putting myself out there, my college experience completely changed. I even met my best friend while we temporarily worked at the campus bookstore for only a week. That first step of intentionality boosted my confidence tremendously and encouraged me to become more active on campus. I began joining organizations, building connections, and surrounding myself with mentors who continue to support and guide me throughout my journey.

Today, I have countless opportunities lined up that once would have intimidated me. I currently work in the business affairs office, serve as the president of an organization where I hosted a large event, and will be serving as a first-year Resident Assistant. I was also invited to serve on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Business and will be studying abroad in Germany this summer to learn about conducting business internationally. Each opportunity has helped me grow personally, professionally, and academically.

Looking back, the girl who once felt uncertain and isolated has grown farther than she could have ever imagined. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has truly shaped my journey for the better. As I complete the final portion of my business administration degree with a 3.914 GPA, I plan to continue serving in leadership positions and pursue my master’s degree in healthcare administration upon graduation. As a woman of color, education is a tool that I am incredibly grateful to utilize, and I hope to continue creating opportunities not only for myself, but for others as well.
