From Empty Pools to Concrete Parks: Reimagining Youth Recreation by MaDream - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I were designing a project to elevate a community, it would focus squarely on repurposing underutilized public spaces into active, multi-generational recreational parks—specifically, a modern concrete skate park and action-sports plaza.
Transforming a defunct municipal space (like an old, drained public pool or an abandoned lot) into a dedicated skate park serves a community in several distinct ways:
Youth Engagement & Inclusivity: Unlike organized team sports that require expensive sign-up fees, strict schedules, and tryouts, action sports like skateboarding, BMX, and scootering have a low barrier to entry. They give teenagers a free, accessible place to gather, exercise, and build a subculture rooted in mutual encouragement.
Safety & Property Protection: When a town lacks a dedicated park, skaters are forced to use downtown sidewalks, handrails, and parking lots. Providing a designated, well-designed concrete plaza safely separates active riders from traffic and protects local business infrastructure from unintended wear and tear.
Civic Pride & Public Art: Modern skate parks don't have to be gray eyesores. Incorporating local art, industrial design elements, and urban graffiti murals turns the park into a vibrant visual landmark. It shifts a space from a symbol of neglect to a hub of community energy.
By taking something overlooked or decommissioned and remodeling it with a gritty, modern aesthetic, the project gives the local youth a sense of ownership and provides the entire community with a revitalized, high-energy gathering space.
