Feedback Isn’t Failure, It’s Fuel by Mackenzie - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
One time I had to learn from feedback was when I received criticism about my approach to school and realized that simply putting in effort was not always enough. I was encouraged to become more organized, manage my time better, ask for help when I needed it, and take more responsibility for my learning. At first, receiving that feedback was difficult because it can be hard to hear that something you are doing needs to change. I felt like I was already trying my best, so hearing that I needed to make changes was frustrating. However, I eventually realized that feedback was not meant to discourage me. It was meant to help me recognize areas where I could improve.
As a student-athlete, I have learned that feedback is a normal and important part of becoming better. In sports, coaches constantly give athletes corrections and advice because they see potential in them and want them to improve. Whether it is improving my technique, communicating better with my teammates, or staying focused during a difficult practice, I have learned that constructive criticism can make me stronger. I began to apply that same mindset to my education.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was that asking for help does not mean that I am incapable. Sometimes I was hesitant to ask questions because I did not want people to think I was struggling or did not understand something. However, I learned that asking for help is actually a sign of maturity and determination. If I do not understand an assignment, concept, or expectation, it is better to ask questions and get clarification than to stay quiet and continue making the same mistake.
That experience also taught me the importance of being honest with myself. I had to look at my habits and recognize that there were things I could control. I could improve my time management, create better study routines, communicate with my professors, and make sure I was prepared before deadlines. I learned that wanting to succeed is important, but my actions have to match my goals. I cannot expect better results if I continue doing the same things that are not working.
Receiving feedback has also changed how I respond to setbacks. Instead of seeing mistakes as proof that I am not good enough, I try to see them as opportunities to learn. College has challenged me academically and personally, and there have been moments when I felt overwhelmed or questioned myself. However, those experiences have taught me resilience. I have learned that one bad grade, one mistake, or one difficult semester does not determine my future. What matters is how I respond and what I choose to do differently moving forward.
Now, when I receive feedback, I try to listen before reacting. I think about what the person is telling me, determine whether there is something I can improve, and then put that advice into action. I have also learned to appreciate people who are willing to be honest with me because constructive feedback can help me see things that I may not recognize on my own.
This lesson will continue to be important as I work toward my career in Kinesiology and athletic training. In that field, I will constantly need to learn from professors, coaches, teammates, athletes, and other professionals. I will need to be open to new information and willing to adjust when something is not working. I want to become the type of professional who does not stop learning after earning a degree, but continues to grow throughout my career.
Overall, learning from feedback has taught me that growth requires humility, accountability, and an open mind. I no longer view constructive criticism as something negative. Instead, I see it as an opportunity to become better. Every piece of feedback gives me a chance to learn something about myself, improve my habits, and move closer to the person and professional I want to become.
