Helping Heal by Logan - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
When I was in 4th grade at Saint Francis Elementary. One of my class mates - Chloe - passed away due to the flue. This hit me very hard as 4th grader - all kids are friends, there are no clichés. As a class we built a memorial for her in our class room. As I got older this feeling never left me. I continued to move forward and was involved in Boy Scouts of America. When it came time to determine what to do for my Eagle Scout project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to create something for Chloe. At Saint Francis, shortly after her passing a tree was planted near the play ground in remembrance of her. I decided that I wanted to construct and install a bench overlooking her memorial and dedicate that bench to her. So, for my Eagle Scout project I gathered all the appropriate material by calling upon local businesses to get donations. I decided that I wanted to power coat the legs of the bench - and the color I choose was her favorite color - Tiffany Blue. I am not sure why I remember her favorite color but I do. After going through the process of getting approval from the school and the Scouts I constructed her bench and added a small plaque so that everyone would know that bench was for Chloe. Shortly after constructing the bench, I received a letter, it was from her parents. Chloe was their only child, and that letter meant alot to me and to my family, knowing that in some small way I helped heal their pain and provided a place for them and anyone else to sit and reflect - not only about Chloe but reflect about anything happening in their life. From my Eagle Scout project and this experience I learned that it is tryin the thought that matters - the bench was not some extravagant thing, but it was meaningful to me and to Chloe's family.
