The Exception by Lizzie - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

Every organism in every ecosystem exists to survive. Every organism must endure, then carry on its species; it is how the brain is wired. However, there is one exception--and it is us.

As nature’s exception, we do more than exist. We can create art, make life-long relationships, and work to understand the universe. As we grow as a society, comprehending this miraculous blessing is a task beyond the ability of generations. Although, as I grow older, I hope to master one of the most unique abilities given to us: the ability to be open-minded.

I believe that one of the most important functions of being human is to understand many different perspectives. Through this skill, we can build friendships. One of the greatest ways to connect with others is through listening. People have such different experiences of life, and listening to them--understanding their perspectives--is something that I hope to work towards mastering in the future.
Another way that I want to master open-mindedness is to understand opposing viewpoints. A value I’ve committed myself to is to continue to be a student of life throughout my future. I want to learn about anything and everything, and in learning, it is most important to consider all perspectives. Through opening my opinions and beliefs to other considerations, I will be able to learn throughout my life.

Finally, I believe that being open-minded can allow us to learn more about ourselves. I not only want to learn about other people and different ideas, but I want to be able to know myself. By expanding my knowledge on other topics, I can build upon my own beliefs and understandings. This ability to do this is something truly fascinating, so I hope to encompass the potential in this skill throughout the upcoming years.

Overall, I am hopeful that I can develop this trait. I will talk to strangers, ask questions about ideas I am unfamiliar with, and look inwards to find meaning. The future, whilst unknown, is waiting for me. I am ready to see it; and with open arms, and an open mind, I invite it.
