The Impact of a Good Book by Leah - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

A fictional character that has taught me a valuable lesson in my life is Lennie from "Of Mice and Men." I first read this book in my sophomore year English class. I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. Throughout the span of this book, I had the honor of reading the part of Lennie. I quickly discovered how much I could relate to Lennie and the emotional attachment I had to reading his part. One thing that surprised me about Lennie was that he was a fairly large man, but he was also extremely kind. He did not always understand his strength, but he never had bad intentions. Not everybody can relate to Lennie because of the genuine love in his heart. He would do anything to prevent his best friend from getting hurt, whom he loved like a brother.

Lennie's actions taught me more than just to be kind. They taught me that no matter what, I should always love the people I come across. It does not matter what their background is, because nobody deserves to be hated for who they genuinely are. I also learned from Lennie what it means to be a good friend. In the book, Lennie would do anything to protect his best friend George. He thought that was the standard for a best friend. Lennie helped me to become a better friend to the people I love.
