One of the most valuable lessons I have learned came from receiving feedback as a soccer player. For years, I believed that working hard and giving my best effort was enough. During one season, however, my coach told me that while my work ethic was strong, I needed to become a more vocal leader on the field. He explained that leadership wasn't just about playing well. It was about communicating, encouraging teammates, and helping the entire team succeed.

At first, I was uncomfortable with that feedback because I have always been more reserved. Speaking up did not come naturally to me, and I worried about saying the wrong thing. Instead of ignoring the advice, I challenged myself to grow. During practices, I started communicating more, encouraging teammates after mistakes, and helping younger players understand drills. During games, I became more intentional about keeping everyone's energy positive and reminding my teammates to stay focused, even when we faced setbacks.

Over time, I realized my coach was right. As I became more confident in using my voice, I also became a better teammate and leader. More importantly, I learned that feedback is not criticism; it is an opportunity to improve. Growth happens when we are willing to step outside of our comfort zones and embrace new challenges.

This experience has changed the way I approach learning. Whether in the classroom, at Southstone Church where I serve in the junior high and high school ministries, or in my future nursing career, I want to continue seeking feedback with an open mind. I know that the best healthcare professionals are lifelong learners who are always willing to listen, improve, and better serve the people who depend on them.
