When I Learned What I Was Capable Of by Lauren - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

Immersed in Catholic School since Kinder, I have always been held to a high standard by family, teachers, and family friends. I am extremely blessed to have experienced such a exceptional education. Ever since I was little, I have always had trouble focusing and completing tests on time. I would always compare myself to others since a young age, but my mindset changed in high school. Growing up in such unity I believed that my brain was suppose to function just as the others. I would be so disappointed in myself when I would score below average, or overhear my classmates talking about their outstanding grades when I was just passing. My elementary and middle schools were coed but my current high school is only girls. Being with both genders for half my life made me realize how I was constantly comparing myself to the boys. I constantly thought to myself about how the stereotype was correct and how boys could do more than girls. Now, in my last year at my all girls high school every single student has beat the stereotype and shown excellence in their entire repertoire. These last four years have been filled with encouragement and positive support from teachers and classmates. Being in a same sex environment has taught me how vigorous women are. I am capable of so much more than I even realized. I am grateful for the positive feedback and words of affirmation that I have received over these years especially from women.
