The Habits Behind My Success by La’Mya - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
The study and learning methods that have had the greatest impact on my academic success are writing down notes, staying organized, and learning from my mistakes. I have learned that academic success is not only about being “naturally good” at a subject, but it’s also about putting in the time, work, and finding what study methods work for you.
One method that has helped me incredibly is writing down notes. Everyone learns differently, and for me, whenever I attended my Biology 101 lecture, jotting down the notes that were on the PowerPoint slides helped me incredibly. I was able to take in all the information she was teaching. I do believe doing this and going home, reviewing the slides she had during class, and taking notes helped me incredibly. Each time, this made me feel very prepared for the test we had.
Another method that has helped me is staying organized. I always write down in my planner the assignments I need to do and when they are due. Keeping track of the deadlines and important school responsibilities is very important. Being organized has taught me responsibility and helped me become more confident in my ability to handle challenging workloads.
Most importantly, I have learned to use my mistakes as opportunities to improve. When I receive an answer that is incorrect or receive a grade that isn’t what I expected, I try to understand what went wrong instead of being discouraged and giving up. I look at my mistakes and try to learn from them, and I make some changes in the way I study. This mindset has helped me become more determined and resilient.
These methods have contributed to my academic success. Soon, I will not only be earning my high school diploma but also my associate’s degree from Delaware State University at 17 years old from attending Early College High School. As I continue my education and work towards eventually becoming a nurse and eventually a CRNA, I know that the ability to stay organized, learn actively, and grow from challenges will be just as important as the knowledge I gain in the classroom. My study habits have not only helped me become a better student, but they have also prepared me to become the hardworking and dedicated professional I want to be.
