Feedback Equals Improvement by Kylie - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

Feedback is the act of communicating about past actions or a process so that a person or system can make changes to improve future results. Feedback can be used in many different ways, like positive, negative, formal, informal, verbal, and nonverbal. It can also be used in different ways, like school, work, and sports. One of the most important times I learned from feedback was through playing softball. As an athlete, I became used to receiving feedback from my coaches, teammates, and even myself. At first, I sometimes took criticism personally because I focused more on what I had done wrong than on how I could improve. Over time, I learned that feedback was not meant to point out my weaknesses, but to help me become a better athlete and person.
There were times when a coach would tell me I needed to change something about the way I approached a practice, game, or skill. My first reaction was sometimes frustration because I felt like I was already working hard. However, I began to realize that effort alone was not always enough. I needed to be willing to listen, make adjustments, and keep practicing even when improvement did not happen immediately. Instead of becoming discouraged by feedback, I started asking myself what I could learn from it and how I could apply it the next time.
This experience changed the way I approach learning in other areas of my life. In school, I became more comfortable asking teachers questions and using their comments to improve my work. Rather than seeing mistakes as failures, I began to see them as opportunities to understand what I could do differently. I also learned that personal growth requires honesty and the willingness to accept that there is always room to improve.
Learning to accept feedback has taught me the importance of having a growth mindset. I now try to listen carefully, consider the advice I receive, and put it into action instead of becoming defensive or discouraged. Whether I am in the classroom, on the softball field, at work, or preparing for college, I know that feedback can help me become stronger and a better person overall.
Most importantly, I have learned that growth does not happen by always being perfect. It happens when I am willing to recognize where I can improve and have the determination to keep working. Feedback has taught me to view challenges as opportunities rather than setbacks, and that lesson will continue to shape the way I learn and grow throughout college and beyond.
